5 Creative Ways to Get Steps in

I often hear people say things like, “I need to get my stairs in today” or “Oh no, I didn’t get in my 10,000 steps today”. We are fixated on setting a goal for how many steps we want to hit and then stopping at nothing to reach that goal. But what if we reframe that? What if instead of making walking a chore, we rally ourselves just to move more? Rather than wandering around your neighborhood for hours on end so that you can close your Apple Watch rings or hit your 5,000 step mark on FitBit, make moving something that you look forward to. The health benefits that come with it are an added bonus.

I have compiled a list of 5 creative ways to walk more…without staring at your step count every 5 minutes. There is nothing wrong with wanting to hit your step goal every day, however, steps go by a lot faster when you are doing something with passion and purpose.

1. Go Museum Hopping

If you live in the city, I’m positive there are plenty of cool museums for you to explore — and many of them are either free or have student/senior discounts. Write down a list of 3 interesting museums in your city and do a walking tour of them. You’ll be surprised at how many steps you take both walking around the museum and walking in-between each museum. Take a friend or family member with you and add a bit of cultural knowledge to your repertoires!

2. Food Tour

Who doesn’t love food? With plenty of restaurants and coffee shops, there’s so much good cuisine to scout. I’m sure that off the top of your head you can name 5 food places in your city that you’ve been dying to check out but haven’t had the time to do so. Whether it’s that food truck that makes the best fish tacos or the new rolled ice-cream shop that everyone at work is buzzing about, make a list of places you want to try. Then, go and spend the day munching on some yummy treats!

3. Bar Crawl

Now this one is for my readers who are 21+ (or 18/19+ for my Canadian readers). Many of us like to drink on the weekends to unwind or socialize. Why not give your Saturday night bar trip a little twist? Instead of going to the usual bar, get together with some of your friends and try out 5 or so bars in one night! This way you can get some steps in and potentially discover the newest hot spot!

4. Be a Tourist in Your Own City

Any city has its own unique history, culture, and art that is there for you to explore. Since many of us lead such busy lives, we often don’t have time to discover our cities to their full extent. For instance, I was born and raised in San Francisco, and I’ve only walked across the Golden Gate Bridge once. Yet, there are people all over the world dying to visit it! It’s important to make time for discovering your city and it offers you the perfect opportunity to move!

5. Fruit Picking Extravaganza

While the other activities I listed apply to folks who live in cities, there are so many opportunities to move in the countryside! One of my favorite pastimes is fruit-picking at a farm. Whether it be apples, strawberries, peaches, or grapes, it is an excellent way to get your steps in while spending quality time with family or friends (not to mention it makes for a great photo op!)

If there’s one thing that I want you to take away from this article, it’s that fulfilling your daily movement requirements doesn’t have to be something you dread. Instead, it can be an opportunity for an adventure and way to spend some quality time with your loved ones. You can transform some of your favorite activities into opportunities to move.
